Yves Chartier. Musicologist, teacher, b Thetford-les-Mines Que, 18 Aug 1942; Lauréat AMQ piano 1959, BA french, latin (Ottawa) 1964, MA classics (Ottawa) 1965, Docteur en musicologie (Paris-Sorbonne) 1973. He began teaching at Ottawa U in 1969. As guest professor he taught Christian hymnology at the University of Strasbourg 1983-4. Specializing in paleography, bibliography, and music theory of the middle ages and renaissance, Chartier in 1985 began to apply microcomputer technology to the complex challenges inherent in the production of critical editions of texts of these periods. In addition to a major work supported by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities, L'Oeuvre musicale d'Hucbald de Saint-Amand: le traité de musique et les compositions (Saint-Laurent, Que1991), Chartier has co-authored several volumes in support of the Ontario Ministry of Education's music program for francophones and has contributed articles to books and music periodicals. He was co-editor of the CAUSM Journal(1973-77), has been editor of Cultures du Canada français, has written for EMC, The New Grove and other encyclopedias and, as revisor as well as writer, has contributed substantially to the Dictionaire de la Musique: les Hommes et leurs oeuvres (under the direction of M. Honneger, 2nd ed, Paris 1986).
