Shields, Thomas Todhunter
Thomas Todhunter Shields, clergyman (b at Bristol, Eng 1 Nov 1873; d at Toronto 4 Apr 1955). A self-educated man and pastor of Jarvis Street Baptist Church in Toronto for 45 years, where he edited the Gospel Witness, Dr Shields championed BAPTIST Christianity and British imperialism against liberal Protestantism and Roman Catholicism. He verbally abused the leaders of Catholic Québec for "slacking" in 2 world wars and was expelled from the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec for his intolerant personal attacks on professors at McMaster University. In response he founded his own denomination and seminary.
