Rohmer, Richard
Richard Rohmer, maj-gen (retired), lawyer, writer (b at Hamilton, Ont 24 Jan 1924). The official honours bestowed upon Rohmer, including DFC (1945), QC (1961), LLD (U of Windsor, 1975) and CMM (1979), attest to the public contributions he has made as a fighter pilot with the RCAF (1942-45), as chairman of the Royal Commission on Publishing (Ont, 1970-72) and as counsel, principally in transportation, land use and municipal law. Originator of the concept of the "Mid-Canada Corridor" and the U of Canada North, he presented these ideas concerning the development of the North in The Green North: Mid-Canada (1970) and expanded on them in The Arctic Imperative (1973). Other publications include 10 works of fiction, of which the first, Ultimatum (1973), that year's best-selling novel, is typical in being a tract for the times played out against a backdrop of technical data. He published Rommell and Patton and Starmageddon in 1986, Red Arctic in 1989 and John A's Crusade, a novel about John A. MACDONALD, in 1995. He is chancellor of U of Windsor.
