From age 13 he was engaged in the FUR TRADE, first with the XY Co, then the NORTH WEST CO and finally the HUDSON'S BAY CO. He served principally in the Athabasca and Mackenzie districts, though he was in charge of the New Caledonia trade 1831-35. Dease assisted Sir John FRANKLIN on his second land expedition to the Arctic. Between 1837 and 1839 Dease and Thomas Simpson made 3 expeditions along the Arctic coast, leaving only a small part of the NORTHWEST PASSAGE unsurveyed. Dease retired to a farm near Montréal in 1841.
