One Third Ninth

One Third Ninth. Piano trio formed in 1970 in Calgary by the violinist Moshe Hammer, the cellist John Kadz (at that time principals of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra), and the pianist Gloria Saarinen. After several CBC broadcasts, a telecast on 'Music to See,' and concerts in various Alberta centres the members resigned their other positions and in 1973 were appointed artists-in-residence for the province and Mount Royal College. Under Alberta's sponsorship they toured the province, giving workshops and concerts in smaller centres. At Mount Royal College they taught chamber music and gave three of the six concerts in the annual Carillon Series sponsored by the Chamber Music Society of Calgary, founded in 1975 with Kadz as president. They gave about 100 other concerts annually in Canada and the USA and a 12-concert tour of Europe in the spring of 1978. The group officially disbanded in 1981.

Kadz (b Norfolk, Va, 26 Oct 1945) studied with Joseph di Tullio in Los Angeles and played with various US orchestras prior to joining the Calgary Philharmonic in 1970. After One Third Ninth ceased its activities, Kadz continued to teach at Mount Royal College Cons, where he co-founded its Academy program and in 1991 was manager of the Academy choral and credit program. He has been a member of the Lyric Chamber Players and a jazz trio called Legit, both in Calgary.
