After studying at Vanier College, he joined his father, the jazz saxophonist Al-Hajj Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr, in the Duke Ellington orchestra in 1987. Later, he played in the Montréal big bands of Denny Christianson, Andrew Homzy and Vic Vogel.
He recorded with François Marcaurelle on the album Opus 1.7 (1993) and performed with the Denny Christianson band at the du Maurier Downtown Jazz Festival in Toronto in 1994. He appeared on Ranee Lee’s double album Dark Divas (2000) and toured with her during the summer of 2000. In 2003, he played with the group Swing Dynamique and in 2004 he recorded on The Now Beyond, an Effendi Records title.
Abdul Al-Khabyyr has been a brass performance teacher at Concordia University, the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, and at CEGEPs in Sherbrooke and St. Laurent. He is the brother of percussionist Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr.
