Goodman, Mildred

Goodman, Mildred. Violinist, b Montreal 13 Nov 1922. She studied 1936-8 with Sascha Jacobsen at the Institute of Musical Art (Juilliard School) and 1938-40 with Maurice Onderet at the McGill Cons (McGill University) and took courses 1943-5 with Jacques Gordon at the ESM. She won a Sarah Fischer Concerts scholarship in the early 1940s and subsequently appeared as a soloist for several Montreal organizations, including the Ladies' Morning Musical Club, the CSM Orchestra (MSO), and the Pro Musica Society. She was concertmaster 1940-61 of the Montreal Women's Symphony Orchestra, and second violin 1942-4 in the McGill String Quartet and 1955-63 in the Montreal String Quartet. She also played in Musica Antica e Nuova 1951-5, the Montreal Trio, the McGill Chamber Orchestra, and various CBC orchestras in Montreal, including the 'Little Symphonies'. She played with the Stratford Festival orchestra in Ontario, and participated in several chamber music concerts there. During the summers 1960-3 she attended Oscar Shumsky's master classes, as well as those of Henryk Szeryng. She was a member of the MSO 1950-88 and became a teacher at McGill University in 1963. She married the composer Clermont Pépin.
