Bostock, Hewitt
Hewitt Bostock, newspaperman, MP, Senator (b at Walton Heath, Surrey, Eng 31 May 1864; d at Monte Creek, BC 28 Apr 1930). Graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge, he was called to the bar in 1888, but in 1893 left for Canada, becoming a rancher and fruit farmer at Monte Creek, British Columbia.
In the 1890s he organized the Kootenay Lumber Co, which he later sold. In 1894 he founded The Province newspaper as a weekly in Victoria, moving it to Vancouver in 1898 as a daily. After becoming involved in politics, he sold his interest in the paper.
In 1896 he was elected to represent Yale-Cariboo in the House of Commons under Laurier. In 1904 he was appointed to the Senate, becoming Liberal Senate leader in 1914. From 1921-22 he was minister of public works in the King government and in 1922 was appointed Speaker of the Senate.
