Masella, Giulio
Giulio (Luigi) Masella. French hornist, teacher, b Montreal 8 Dec 1935; premier prix french horn (CMM) 1952. His brother Joseph and Harry Berv taught him at the CMM 1947-55. He was a member of the MSO 1954-82 and played regularly in CBC orchestras and ensembles 1965-82. He also played 1965-75 in the McGill Chamber Orchestra. He took occasional lessons 1969-70 from the Australian horn player Barry Tuckwell at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, to perfect his skills. He was a founding member of the SMCQ Ensemble. In 1974 he founded the Quebec Brass Ensemble, chiefly to give workshops in schools. In 1974 he taught at the UQTR 1974-82 and at the St-Laurent CÉGEP 1975-87. In 1982 he was appointed assistant personnel director of the MSO, and after having been its assistant music librarian 1982-6, he became music librarian in 1986.
