Oliver, Frank
Frank Oliver, newspaper publisher, politician (b Peel County, Canada W 14 Sept 1853; d at Ottawa 31 Mar 1933). He was the son of Allan Bowsfield but took his mother's maiden name. He brought the first printing press to Edmonton and in 1880 founded the Edmonton Bulletin which he published until 1923. He was a member of the North-West Council 1883-85 for Edmonton, and was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories in 1888 and 1894. He sat in the House of Commons as a Liberal under Sir Wilfrid LAURIER 1896-1917 and was minister of the interior and superintendent general of Indian affairs 1905-11. As the former, he continued the immigration policies of Sir Clifford SIFTON.
