François Brassard
François Brassard, composer, ethnomusicologist, organist, critic, teacher, pianist (b at St-Jérôme [Métabetchouan], Qué 6 Oct 1908; d at Québec City 26 Apr 1976). He studied music primarily with Claude CHAMPAGNE and Léo-Pol MORIN. From time to time, 1930-70, he was organist at St-Dominique church in Jonquière.
The author of numerous essays, as well as analyses and harmonizations of French Canadian folk songs, Brassard is closely linked with Université de Laval's Archives de folklore. In 1946 he was appointed to the archives' publications committee and in 1971 joined its research centre. He also wrote articles using the noms de plume Braz Arpiani and Thibaut de Champagne. In 1974 Brassard received the Canadian Music Council Medal.
