His composition teachers have been Michel Longtin, André Prévost, Jacques Hétu, Serge Garant, and Marcelle Deschênes. In 1987 Frenette began teaching for Montreal's Protestant school board. A prize winner, notably in CAPAC's 1979 Sir Ernest MacMillan competition (second prize) for La Chevelure de Bérénice, he composes for a wide variety of ensembles including electroacoustic instruments and mixed media. Les Oiseaux de verre (1980), a setting of a poem by Nicole Desrosiers, was commissioned and recorded by Christine Lemelin (RCI 570). His theatre works include the opera Les Étrivières (1983, libretto by Nicole Desrosiers) commissioned by the University of Montreal Faculty of Music and Et lisser son visage comme au fil du temps (1985) a multi-media work for tape and dancers. Most of his compositions have been performed in concert and broadcast by the CBC. Frenette is a member of the CLComp and the Canadian Electroacoustic Community and an associate of the Canadian Music Centre.
