Canadian Association of Music Libraries/Association canadienne des bibliothèques musicales
Canadian Association of Music Libraries (CAML)/Association canadienne des bibliothèques musicales (ACBM). The Canadian branch of the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (IAML). Founded in 1971, CAML succeeded the Canadian Music Library Association (CMLA), which was a section of the Canadian Library Association. CAML aims to support all aspects of music librarianship in Canada, including research and scholarly projects, and to cooperate with other national and international organizations concerned with all aspects of music. It is composed of members of the university community, Library and Archives Canada, public libraries, provincial and national archives, music conservatories, the Canadian Music Centre, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, as well as specialized libraries, performers and composers. The association meets annually, often in conjunction with Canadian University Music Society and the Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada, or with other associations holding similar interests. The first IAML meeting to be held in Canada took place in Montreal in 1975.
In 1998 CAML inaugurated the Helmut Kallmann Award for excellence in music librarianship and archives work in Canada. The award is named after Dr Helmut Kallmann who was chief of the music division at the National Library of Canada from 1970 to 1981. The award is open to librarians, archivists, academics and others who have made a substantial contribution to the preservation, development and/or research of Canadian music collections. The first recipient was Jane Ann Pearce Baldwin (2000). Other winners include Maria Calderisi (2002) and Dr Elaine Keillor (2004).
CAML began publishing a trimestrial journal in 1972 entitled Newsletter/Nouvelles. The title was changed to Review/Revue in 2001 to reflect more accurately the scope and purpose of the journal. Announcements and information are communicated through CAML's electronic mail distribution list.
