Jean Broadfoot

Jean (McNeill) Broadfoot. Teacher, pianist, born Winnipeg 29 Apr 1920, died 5 Jun 2009; LRSM 1946, LMM 1948. Her studies were with Leonard Heaton in Winnipeg, Harold Samuel in London, and Bernard Weiser in Minneapolis. She began teaching privately in Winnipeg in 1940; her consistent success led to frequent engagements as a competition-festival adjudicator and a WBM examiner. Though she has not appeared often as a solo performer, Broadfoot has accompanied singers and played for the choirs and operatic productions of Berythe Birse. She taught 1964-9 at the University of Manitoba and was accompanist for the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir in the 1970s. She began teaching at the Canadian Mennonite Bible College in 1975. Among her pupils have been Emanuel Ax, Audrey Cooke Belyea, Douglas Finch, Sheila Henig, Ailsa Lawson, Sydney Young McInnis, and Patricia Shand. Broadfoot was president of the MRMTA 1978-81 and of the CFMTA 1987-9. She is an honorary life member of the CMEA and the MMEA.
