Bathurst Inlet

Bathurst Inlet, a southeastern extension of Coronation Gulf, penetrating the arctic shore for some 200 km. The hamlet of Bathurst Inlet is located at the mouth of the Burnside River, which drains Contwoyto Lake to the southwest. The inlet was named by Sir John Franklin in 1821 for Henry Bathurst, 3rd earl of Bathurst, who was then colonial secretary. Some of its numerous islands have rocky cliffs in which peregrine falcons and golden eagles nest.
