After a sojourn in London 1878-82, William returned to Canada to become the founder and only principal of the Montreal School of Music (ca 1886-ca 1899) and eventually the bursar of the Dominion College of Music. His compositions include a waltz, Fabiola (Laurent, La Force 1867; dedicated to Mme George-Étienne Cartier), and Souvenir de Montréal (Novello no date), both for piano. Among his pupils were his son Max and Caroline Racicot.
