Timothy Maloney

Maloney, S. (Stephen) Timothy. Musicologist, clarinetist, administrator, b Toronto 15 Jan 1947; B MUS (Toronto) 1968, Artists Diploma (Toronto) 1969, M MUS (Catholic U) 1970, DMA (Rochester) 1986. His clarinet teachers included Avrahm Galper, Ezra Schabas, and James Morton and several others in the USA and Europe. His doctoral dissertation was a survey of Canadian wind ensemble music. Maloney won first prize in the 1975 CBC Talent Festival wind instrument category and subsequently played in chamber ensembles and solo recitals and as soloist with orchestras in Canada, France and the USA. He has also been a member of Canadian and US orchestras, and he played in Glenn Gould's 1982 recording of Wagner's Siegfried Idyll.

Maloney's positions as teacher of music history, clarinet, and as ensemble coach have included those at Lakehead University 1975-8, Grande Prairie College, Alta 1978-80 and Stetson U, DeLand, Fla 1982-8. In 1988 he was appointed chief of the music division of the National Library of Canada. He has served also on the boards of various musical organizations and has presented talks at conferences. He has written for EMC.
