Martin, Raymonde

Raymonde Martin. Cellist, teacher, b Montreal 27 Apr 1923. She enrolled at the CMM in 1943 and studied solfège and harmony with her sister Gilberte and cello with Jean Belland and later with Roland Leduc. At the same time she improved her knowledge of chamber and orchestral music. A member 1940-50 of the Montreal Women's Symphony Orchestra, she performed Boellmann's Variations symphoniques at the Matinées symphoniques of the MSO and Saint-Saëns' Concerto No. 1 in 1949 with the Montreal Youth Symphony Orchestra. During these years she also played on radio and in public recitals. She won the Prix Archambault in 1947 and a Quebec government grant in 1950 and attended the Paris Conservatory for four years, studying with Simone Plé-Caussade (theory) and Paul Bazelaire (cello). During the summer of 1953 she again worked with the latter at the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, while attending Nadia Boulanger's classes. In 1955 she gave up performing to teach in private schools. She also taught at the University of Ottawa 1967-71 and at the Conservatoire de Hull 1967-80.
