Cavalho, Rachel
Rachel Cavalho. Pianist, teacher, lecturer, b Queensland, Australia. She studied in England with Arthur Alexander, Louis Kentner, John Nowell, and Priaulx Rainier. She performed in concert and on radio in England and later in Canada. She moved to Canada in 1948 and taught at the Hambourg Conservatory, Toronto. She presented CBC radio's weekly 'Music for Young Musicians' 1955-6 and 'Music for Young Pianists' 1956-7, has taught privately in Toronto, and has lectured frequently on contemporary music. Her efforts to promote the teaching and performance of Canadian music include the publication Scale Patterns for Young Pianists (BMI Canada 1968) and the article 'Canadian piano music for teaching' (Musicanada, Jun-Jul 1968). She was one of the principal founders and a director of Contemporary Showcase. She is the player and commentator on Music for Young Pianists (Hallmark RS-8), an educational recording based on her radio series, and a pianist on the 1969 Waterloo-BMI recordings Contemporary Canadian Music for Young Pianists (CCM-1, CCM-2).
