Quebec, North Shore and Labrador Railway

Quebec, North Shore and Labrador Railway links the towns of Labrador City, Wabush and Schefferville to the port of Sept-Îles. The contract for the 573 km of main track was awarded September 1950 and work was completed, through very difficult terrain and under harsh climatic conditions, in February 1954. Iron ore is hauled from Labrador City and Wabush throughout the year. In a typical year, the track is subjected to some 14.5 billion tonnes of traffic per km - a challenge to maintenance, along with some 2500 culverts and 7 bridges. Construction of the railway necessitated one of the greatest airlifts in the history of civil aviation.
