Inglis, Phylis
Phylis (Elizabeth) Inglis (b Dilworth). Pianist, voice teacher, b Victoria, BC, 23 Nov 1916; LRSM 1936, BA (British Columbia) 1940. A niece of Ira Dilworth, she studied piano with Gladys Hewlings in Victoria and 1934-44 with Isabel Campbell in Vancouver. In 1936 she won the Gold Medal (for Canada) in the RSM piano examinations. She studied accompanying and singing with Avis Phillips. In 1942 she began to teach singing. Her pupils include Heather Thomson, Milla Andrew, and Shirley Chapman, whom she accompanied many times 1940-67 on CBC radio and TV. Another pupil is Betty Phillips. In 1959 she formed the Phylis Inglis Singers, at first eight, later 16 voices, which performed on CBC radio and TV and were active until 1967. Inglis has served on various boards and was president 1964-66 of the Vancouver Woman's Musical Club. She has been an adjudicator in Alberta and British Columbia and has examined voice for the universities of Alberta, Calgary, and Lethbridge.
