Paul Kilburn. Pianist, teacher, composer, b Toronto 7 Feb 1936; B MUS (Toronto) 1958. Paul Kilburn's teachers at the Royal Conservatory of Music included his father, Weldon, (piano) and Samuel Dolin (piano, theory, and composition). At the University of Toronto he studied composition with John Beckwith and Oskar Morawetz. In 1976 he took master classes with Karl Ulrich Schnabel at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Kilburn began teaching piano and theory privately in Toronto in 1958. His piano compositions, written 1970-2 in the 12-tone idiom, include Trio for Piano Solo, Reflections on Ice, and Sonata, all premiered (and the sonata recorded) by Antonin Kubálek. Kilburn performed his own Five Pieces on CBC radio's 'Arts National' in 1978.
