Cadrin, Paul
Paul Cadrin. Teacher, musicologist, choir conductor, b Montreal 14 Oct 1943; MA theory (McGill) 1979, PH D musicology (British Columbia) 1986. One of the first graduates of the specialized theory program at McGill University, he began to teach at Laval University in 1974. His areas of special interest are contemporary music and the study of the basics of music theory. He has been an active choir director for over 20 years, and began to conduct the Camerata vocale de Québec in 1986. He specializes in a cappella repertoire, especially of the 20th century, within which he favors Canadian composers. In February 1990 his choir premiered Bengt Hambraeus'Cinq Psaumes. Cadrin has been a guest panelist and lecturer for various institutions and associations, including the Chaire de recherche sur la culture d'expression française en Amérique du Nord, the Canadian Congress of Music Theory (at conferences in Edmonton and London, Ont), and at a CUMS meeting. He has written several articles for Canadian music periodicals. In 1991, he was preparing a work on the teachings of counterpoint as a basic grammar of Western musical idioms and another on the chamber music of Karol Szymanowski, whose first string quartet was the subject of his doctoral thesis.
