Gale, Nina
Nina (Hungerford Maud) Gale. Soprano, teacher, adjudicator, b Elora, near Guelph, Ont, 6 Oct 1884, d Toronto 29 Aug 1964. She studied at the TCM (RCMT) as a scholarship pupil of Ethel Shepherd, in London with Albert Visetti and Sir Henry Wood, and in Milan with Madame Norri-Baj and Teresa Arkel. Nina Gale made her debut 25 Apr 1914 as Norma at Alba, Italy, and soon added to her repertoire the soprano roles in Il Trovatore, Tannhäuser, and Cavalleria Rusticana. Leaving Italy for London at the outbreak of World War I, she joined the Carl Rosa Opera Company as leading soprano. She made many concert appearances at this time and also taught, while in London, at a studio in Aeolian Hall. Returning to Canada she joined the staff of the TCM in 1925, became soprano soloist at St Andrew's Church, Toronto, and gave many recitals throughout Ontario. She was noted for her great personal charm and gracious manner. A scholarship in her name was awarded annually 1964-72, to a vocal student at the RCMT.
