Marcil, Monique
Monique Marcil. Pianist, administrator, b Montreal, 28 Apr 1934; premier prix piano (CMM) 1950. Following piano studies (1946-50) with Fleurette Beauchamp at the CMM, she worked (1954-6) at the Vienna Music Academy under Bruno Seidlhofer, then (1956-60) at the Juilliard School in New York with Beveridge Webster. She also attended a summer session at the Aspen School of Music, Col. Returning to Montreal in 1960, she gave several recitals and chamber music concerts while teaching at the CMM. She was also heard on CBC radio and television. In 1963, she helped establish the Montreal International Music Competition of which she became Director General in 1965. In this capacity, she was guest of honour at such prestigious competitions as Moscow, Warsaw and Fort Worth, Texas. In 1986, she received the prize of the Concert Society of the Jewish People's Schools and Peretz Schools awarded annually to a personality of the Canadian artistic world. In 1988, she was named a member of the Order of Canada. Monique Marcil has recorded six sonatas by Boccherini with cellist Charles Houdret (1963, Bar. BC-1815-2815).
