Michael Kilburn. Cellist, b Toronto 4 Aug 1934; Artist Diploma (Toronto) 1953. He was a pupil of Cornelius Ysselstyn 1946-53 and Zara Nelsova (summer 1952) in Toronto and of Leonard Rose (summers 1954-7) at Meadowmount, NY; he played 1956-64 in the TSO and was a soloist with that orchestra in a 1962 performance of Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme. That same year he participated in the Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow and played during the summer in the London Symphony Orchestra. He taught 1965-9 at McGill University and joined the Conservatoire de musique du Québec in 1966 teaching in both Trois-Rivières and Montreal. He has prepared many pupils for careers in orchestras and chamber groups including Christopher Best, Charles Bernard, Marie Gélinas, Sylvie Lambert, Thérèse Ryan, and Louise Trudel. He was a member 1966-8 of the MSO and rejoined that orchestra in 1976.

His son, Raymond (b 1961), is a pianist who has performed in Canada and the USA. In 1990 he taught at Indiana University.
