Montréal English Critics Circle (MECCA) Awards, The
The MECCAs, or the Montréal English Critics Circle Awards, are held annually in the fall to honour the best in English-language theatre in Montréal. Recipients are chosen by participating local theatre critics and journalists who form a "critics circle."
Co-founded in 1998 by theatre critics Gaëtan Charlebois and Myron Galloway, the MECCAs are honorary, not monetary, and cover 11 categories: best actor, actress, director, new text, ensemble, visiting production, set design, costume designer, lighting, sound and production.
Although the awards, in the form of certificates, were originally mailed to the winners, the event has been held live since 2006. Two additional award categories are announced only at the event. These are the Revelation Award, for an individual or organization contributing especially compelling "breakout" work, and The Myron Galloway Award for Distinction, for an individual or organization whose contribution to the Montréal theatre scene is regarded as significant.
