Baillargeon, Marcel

Marcel Baillargeon. Flutist, teacher, b Montreal 6 Oct 1928; premier prix flute (CMM) 1949. He studied piano with Oscar O'Brien and at 15 entered the CMM, where his teachers were Auguste Descarries and Yvonne Hubert. In 1946 he began to concentrate on the flute, studying at the CMM with his father, Hervé Baillargeon, and with René Le Roy. After winning several prizes and a scholarship from the Ladies' Morning Musical Club, he studied 1950-4 at the Paris Conservatoire with Roger Cortet, Gaston Crunelle, and Lucien Lavaillotte. For the CBC he gave many recitals and was a soloist in the programs 'The Little Symphonies' and 'Heure du concert.' With Kenneth Gilbert he toured Quebec 1958-9 for the JMC. He participated in recitals by the sopranos Claire Gagnier, Miliza Korjus, Marthe Létourneau, and others. He was a member 1959-62 of the Ted Elfstrom Jazz Octet (and soloist on its LP Surprise! Surprise! 1960, Laur JL-3001), principal flute 1973-4 of the CBC Montreal orchestra, and an occasional performer with the SMCQ, at the University of Montreal Nocturnales (late-evening concerts), and with the MSO. He taught 1970-80 at the École Vincent-d'Indy, 1972-4 at the CMM, 1973-80 at the University of Montreal, at the Marguerite-Bourgeoys College, and in 1983 at Laval University.
