Marc David. Conductor, teacher, b Kingston, Ont, 26 Aug 1958; B MUS theory (McGill) 1983. After taking courses in violin, guitar, trombone, and piano he devoted himself to trombone and conducting.during his studies at McGill University. He subsequently completed his training in conducting at the RCMT 1983-4 and at the Pierre Monteux School in Hancock, Me (summers 1983-7), where he became Charles Bruck's assistant in 1989. He also took master classes at the University of Hartford, Conn. He received the Heinz Unger conducting award in 1984 and a scholarship from the Canada Council in 1985. He was then appointed music director of five ensembles: the Sherbrooke Youth Symphony Orchestra (in 1986), the Sherbrooke Symphony Orchestra (in 1988), the the University of Montreal Faculty of Music orchestra (in 1988), the Orchestre de chambre de l'Estrie (in 1989), and the Ensemble Musica Nova (in 1990), the last-named devoted to contemporary repertoire. He also is the co-founder of the last two ensembles. David has conducted the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (in 1985), the Orchestre des jeunes de Fribourg, Switzerland (in 1986), the New England SO (in 1990), and the Adrian (Mich) SO and the UNAM Philharmonic, Mexico (both in 1991). In 1990 he conducted a production of Puccini's La Bohème by the Saskatoon Opera Association. He has also taught trombone at the UQTR (1981-3, 1986-7), at the Collège de Sherbrooke (beginning in 1986) and at Bishop's University (beginning in 1988).
