Régis, Louis-Marie
Louis-Marie Régis, priest, Thomist philosopher (b at Hébertville, Qué 8 Dec 1903; d at Montréal 2 Feb 1988). Régis was one of the most productive Catholic philosophers in Canada and one of the few whose work is well known in both languages. He was educated chiefly at Dominican colleges in St-Hyacinthe, Qué, Hainault, Belgium, and Ottawa, though he also studied briefly at Oxford, Cologne and Paris. He taught in Montréal and Ottawa. Of his some 60 books and articles, the best known are St. Thomas and Epistemology (1946) and Epistemology (1959). The latter, widely used in Catholic colleges and universities, emphasizes and theorizes about the importance of scientific knowledge.
