Mills, Isabelle

Isabelle (Margaret) Mills. Educator, writer, conductor, b Fleming, Sask, near Brandon, Man, 3 Sep 1923; ARCT 1948, BA (Manitoba) 1964, MA (Columbia) 1965, ED D (Columbia) 1971. She studied in Brandon and summers (1947, 1949, and 1950) at the RCMT. She taught music and music education 1947-67 at Brandon College and in 1967 joined the University of Saskatchewan at Saskatoon, where, besides teaching, she has done much research on Canadian (including Native) music, especially that suitable for young listeners. She was assistant dean 1979-84 of the university's College of Arts and Science and was named professor emeritus in 1991. A strong advocate of Canadian music, she has given many public lectures and workshops, among them six presentations at the University of Chernivtsi (Ukraine) in 1986. She has directed church choirs, the University of Saskatchewan Quance Chorus, and a choral group (recruited from Saskatoon churches) which recorded Come, Let Us Sing: The United Church Hymn Heritage in Sound (1975; Colly CLS 963). Mills is a contributor to EMC.
