Howard (Fuller) Brown. Pianist, teacher, b Arkona, near London, Ont, 24 Jul 1920; ATCM 1939, BA (Toronto) 1943, B MUS (Toronto) 1946, Artist Diploma (RCMT) 1949, MA music literature (Michigan) 1954. After completing his ATCM he studied at the University of Toronto with Healey Willan and Leo Smith and at the RCMT with Lubka Kolessa and Boris Roubakine (piano) and Arnold Walter (history). He was in charge of piano teaching 1949-50 at the Halifax Cons (Maritime Conservatory of Music) and 1950-3 at Mount Allison University and served 1953-67 as head of the Dept of Music at Mount Allison University. He spent the summers of 1951-4 studying music literature at the University of Michigan. In 1957, on an award from the Royal Society of Canada, he studied in England with the pianist Harold Craxton and the harpsichordist Valda Aveling. He was head of the Dept of Music at Bishop's University 1967-83, and in 1984 was named professor emeritus. Brown has appeared in recital and as an orchestral soloist in the Atlantic provinces and has been heard in broadcasts from CBC Halifax. With Derek C. Oppen, he transferred the classical 78 rpm recordings from the private collection of the poet Ralph Gustafson to tapes, issued by Bishop's University as the Gustafson Piano Library (1971-)
