Garrouteigt, Henri
(Jean-Joseph) Henri Garrouteigt. Gregorianist, b Paris 28 or 29 Oct 1875, d Montreal 28 Aug 1965. He joined the Sulpicians in 1893 in Issy and was ordained a priest in 1898 in Paris. He held a degree in philosophy and a doctorate in theology.
From 1903 to 1917 Garrouteigt was a teacher and choirmaster at the Grand Séminaire of Montreal. He introduced Gregorian chant at the seminary in 1903, the year of the Motu Proprio by Pius X, and promoted it among the parish clergy and the religious communities. He was appointed head of the board of studies of the Schola cantorum of Montreal and was director of the school of liturgical singing at the Congregation of Notre-Dame's Institut pédagogique, founded in the late 1920s. Guillaume Dupuis was one of his pupils.
Garrouteigt was a contributor to the Revue grégorienne edited by Dom Mocquereau in Tournai, Belgium, and to the one edited by Dom Pothier in Grenoble. He also wrote 'Le chant grégorien: sa nature, ses différents genres, réponse aux objections' (Extrait de la Revue canadienne, Montreal 1909).
