Hearts Content Cable Station

Hearts Content Cable Station is a provincial HISTORIC SITE commemorating one of the most significant events in the 19th century: the laying of a trans-Atlantic TELEGRAPH cable in 1866 from Ireland to HEART'S CONTENT, NL. The idea of laying a telegraph cable between Europe and North America was considered by most to be impossible at the time, but Cyrus West Field, an American promoter and entrepreneur, was convinced it could be done. His cable connection made communication between Europe and North America almost instantaneous, and ushered in the modern age of intercontinental telecommunications. The cable station consists of an 1875 office building and a 1918 extension. Exhibits focus on the history of telegraphy and the role Hearts Content played in the industry. The site features guides in period costumes and is open from mid-May to early October.
