Gordon Hancock

Gordon Hancock. Administrator, pianist, organist-choirmaster, teacher, b Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, 20 Mar 1912, d Regina 22 Jan 1978; ATCM 1930, LTCL 1947, FTCL 1947. His family moved to Canada in 1913. A pupil of Arthur Bates and Lyell Gustin, he was an organist-choirmaster in Saskatoon 1928-43, in North Battleford 1943-8, and in Regina 1948-58. He also taught privately until 1948, then at the Regina Conservatory until 1958. He and his wife, Mossie Hancock, formed a piano duo, their performances including Mozart's Concerto in E Flat with the Regina Symphony Orchestra in 1958 and many public and CBC recitals. They were co-hosts 1959-74 for the music appreciation programs "As You Like It" and "The Music of Man" on CKCK radio, Regina. In 1958 Gordon Hancock became executive director of the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association. During his tenure the festival movement grew substantially. On his retirement in 1976 a scholarship was established in his name. He was Saskatchewan's representative 1958-76 on the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals and served 1969-70 as president of that organization.
