Lalande, Germain
Germain Lalande. Gregorianist, teacher, b Ste-Scholastique (Mirabel), near Montreal, 21 Sep 1903; L LITT (Paris) 1933, diploma in liturgical singing (Institut grégorien, Paris) 1933. After being educated in Ste-Thérèse and at the Grand séminaire de Montréal, where he studied singing with Jean-Noël Charbonneau and Guillaume Dupuis, he was ordained a priest in 1929. During a stay 1930-3 in Paris, he joined the Company of Saint-Sulpice in 1931 and studied with Auguste Le Guennant (Gregorian technique), Marc de Ranse (harmony), and Henri Potiron (Gregorian accompaniment).
Lalande returned to Canada and was a teacher and choirmaster 1934-45 at the Collège de Montréal, became bursar of the Grand séminaire de Montréal, and was director 1951-67 of its schola. A member of the diocesan committee on sacred music, he was appointed in 1964 to the episcopal commission on liturgical reform.
From 1964 on, Lalande composed for the commission and worked with several women's religious communities on the liturgy. His settings of parts of the Kyriale, along lines suggested by Vatican II, have appeared in the weekly religious missal Prions en Église from time to time.
