Douglas Hector Haynes

Elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1974, Haynes was chairman of the dept of art and design at U of A (1976-80). An exhibition of his work, entitled Cubism Revisited and organized by the Edmonton Art Gallery, was held in 1984.

Douglas Hector Haynes, abstract painter, teacher (b at Regina, Sask 1 Jan 1936). He graduated from the art dept of the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (now Alberta Coll of Art) in 1958, studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, The Hague (1960-61), and travelled widely throughout Europe (1967-68). He first became known for his painted constructions done on burlap, string and other materials (1963-69). In 1970 he visited New York C, renewed an interest in the work of A. Gottlieb and R. Motherwell and shifted his attention to painting. Around 1977, stimulated by Jack BUSH, his work became more personal and accomplished.

In the 1980s Haynes enriched his art by shifting his reference points backwards in time, first to Cubism and then to El Greco and Velasquez. Four trips to Spain (1985-89) culminated in his Toledo Series exhibition, organized by the Edmonton Art Gallery, which toured to Calgary, Banff and Hamilton in 1992. Douglas Haynes: 25 Years was organized by the Edmonton Art Gallery in 2000.
