Piltch, David
David (Samuel) Piltch. Bassist, drummer, composer, b Toronto 29 Jan 1960. He began his career in his late teens in Toronto jazz clubs (eg, the Mother Necessity Jazz Workshop and Bourbon Street) accompanying such local and visiting musicians as Chet Baker, Ted Moses, Art Pepper, Zoot Sims, and Don (W.) Thompson. He toured in the USA and Canada 1979-80 with Blood, Sweat & Tears and in 1981 with Chuck Mangione. In 1982, with the saxophonist Ron Allen and the drummer Mike Sloski, he formed the fusion band Strangeness Beauty, which made the LP Back to Nowhere (C-Note 821040).
Leaving the trio in 1983 Piltch turned from jazz to pop music, working extensively in Toronto studios. He also would tour and record with the Toronto singers Mary Margaret O'Hara and Holly Cole, and record with k.d. lang, before the decade's end. Equally proficient on double-bass and bass guitar, Piltch has been heard as a soloist on the aforementioned LPs by Rob Piltch, Kathryn Moses, and Ted Moses, as well as by the guitarist Reg Schwager (Resonance, 1986, Justin Time JUST-13) and Bernie Senensky, and appears on other recordings by artists as diverse as Hugh Marsh, M+M, Raffi, Ken Ramm, and Ian Thomas. As a drummer, he has played for many Cobourg (Ont) Jazz Society presentations and in concert with Jane Bunnett. He has written scores for film and TV.
Susan Piltch, sister of Rob and David, has played flute and/or piano in Toronto studio and lounge groups.
