Lidov, David. Composer, teacher, b Portland, Ore, 9 Jan 1941; MA (Columbia) 1965. He studied composition with Otto Luening at Columbia and has written a Symphony (1964), Three Meditations on Prince William Sound (1990, for string orchestra), chamber works including Istanpittas (1968, for cello, saxophone, and trombone), and songs and choral pieces on texts by Yeats, Pratt, Blake, and, for The Vision of Louis Riel (1968), John Robert Colombo. Using computers, he has researched the musical applications of mathematical linguistics and the relationships between the logic of phrasing in music and grammar in speech. He was music specialist 1968-70 at Lower Canada College and conductor 1968-70 of the Montreal Jewish Folk Choir. In 1971 he joined the music staff at York University, Toronto. Christopher Weait and Monica Gaylord recorded his Fantasy for bassoon and piano (Mel SMLP-4032). He is an associate of the Canadian Music Centre.
