Christopher Hinton
Christopher Hinton, animator, writer (b at Galt [now Cambridge], Ont 1952). Christopher Hinton studied filmmaking at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ont. After graduating he went to Winnipeg, where he animated Sesame Street inserts and freelanced for the NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA's (NFB) Prairie Studio. He directed Blowhard (1978) with Brad Caslor and Lady Frances Simpson (1978) for the Canadian Vignettes series of shorts. He also made a number of independently produced shorts, including The Gift (1981), Fiprecan (1983), A Piece of the Action (1983), Giordano (1986) and A Nice Day in the Country (1988).
Christopher Hinton moved to Montréal and again freelanced for the NFB, directing and animating a number of award-winning shorts, including the funny Oscar-nominated Blackfly (1991), based on Wade HEMSWORTH's popular song; Flux (2002), which won the critics prize from the International Animated Film Festival in Annecy, France, and received a PRIX JUTRA nomination; and cNote (2005), which harkens back to the best work of Norman MCLAREN and received the GENIE AWARD for animated short and a second Prix Jutra nomination. He also taught animation courses at Concordia University.
As an independent filmmaker, Christopher Hinton has applied his wildly kinetic, almost child-like style to Nibbles (2003; a Prix Jutra winner and Oscar/BAFTA nominee) and Twang (2002), a startling and ambiguous visual twang released on the Internet.
