Duggan, Carl
Carl Duggan. Tenor, b Leacross, Sask, 23 Jan 1935, d 1992; LMM 1960, ARCT 1960, ARCM, LRAM, FTCL 1969, B MUS (Durham 1974, M MUS (Durham) 1986. He studied in Saskatoon with Mary Anderson (voice) and Mabel Sanda (piano) and in Winnipeg after 1955 with Filmer Hubble (organ). During his first year in England he won a National Federation of Music Societies prize which led to a series of engagements 1962-6, including the title role in a performance of The Dream of Gerontius under Eric Thiman. He also had lessons with Roy Henderson and Dame Eva Turner and was coached by Peter Pears. In 1966 he joined the English Opera Group with which, in England and abroad, he sang Lysander in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Madwoman in Britten's Curlew River, and Acis in Acis and Galatea, among other roles. He also taught at the University of London. He became principal of the WOCM and a voice teacher at the University of Western Ontario in 1974 and that same year sang in Mozart's Requiem with the NACO in Ottawa and Kingston, Ont, and was aria soloist in Bach's St Matthew Passion with the Metropolitan Festival Choir and Orchestra, Toronto. He continued to give concerts in Canada and Europe and in 1991 performed in Hong Kong. He composed the anthem 'Drop, drop, slow tears' (Frederick Harris 1984). Duggan was married to mezzo-soprano Devina Bailey.
