Anti-terrorism Act
The Anti-terrorism Act was passed by Parliament in response to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, DC, on 11 September 2001. The Act was proclaimed in force not as a whole but in individual sections or parts over a few years, and is not so much a self-contained act as a series of amendments to existing acts.
The primary changes brought by the Act are to be found in the criminal code. The Criminal Code now has specific provisions defining what a terrorist activity is, what types of conduct are subject to criminal sanction and what penalties exist for being involved in such conduct.
