Burrows, Ann
(Barbara) Ann Burrows. Teacher, critic, b Entrance, west of Edmonton, 16 Jul 1922; ARCM 1945, M MUS (Indiana) 1964, honorary LL D (Alberta) 1987. Her teachers included Frank Merrick and Frank Howes at the RCM 1942-6, Boris Roubakine in Banff, and Raymond Dudley and György Sebök at Indiana U. Although Burrows lost her sight in childhood, she pursued an active career, teaching piano, theory, and history 1948-52 at Downe House School for Girls in Berkshire, England, and privately from 1952 onwards in Edmonton, and working as a CBC broadcast writer and commentator 1960-5 and as music critic 1965-71 for the Edmonton Journal. She began broadcasting as a reviewer for CBC Edmonton in 1971. Burrows developed a music program for the blind at Alberta College Music Centre, which has been published as Music Through Braille (Edmonton 1987, with a foreword by Prince Charles).
