Albert William Trueman, cultural and university administrator (b at Waverley, Penn 17 Jan 1902; d at Ottawa 29 June 1988). As government film commissioner (head of the National Film Board), 1953-57, and director of the Canada Council, 1957-65, he made major contributions to Canadian cultural policies, primarily by promoting the roles and influence of both agencies. He was also an experienced and skilled university administrator, serving as president of U of Manitoba (1945-48) and of U of New Brunswick (1948-53), and as principal and dean of University College, U of Western Ontario (1965-67). Though born in the US, he was educated in Canada and Britain and his early career was as a professor in Canadian universities. He published A Second View of Things: A Memoir in 1982.
