Nordheimer, Albert
Albert Nordheimer. Music dealer, publisher, piano manufacturer, b Toronto ca 1850-5, d there 2 Dec 1938. Educated at Upper Canada College, Toronto, and in Europe, he joined A. & S. Nordheimer music store and publishing firm in 1870 and became managing director and later (1912-27) president. For more than 50 years he chaired the music committee of St James' Cathedral, Toronto, and in 1902 he became Dutch consul-general for Canada. He composed at least nine songs and dances which were published 1895-1916 by his firm. Among them was a setting of Bliss Carman's 'Hunting Song (Tarantara)' (1908).
Albert's son Gerald (b Toronto 2 Jul 1929, d Kelowna BC 19 Jan 2005) was general assistant 1947-57 at Boosey & Hawkes (Canada) and music librarian 1957-73 at CBC Toronto (responsibilities including the CBC Symphony Orchestra), prior to joining the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1974 as librarian and later personnel and stage manager.
