Jordan, Albert David

Albert David Jordan. Organist, conductor, administrator, b Seaforth, near Stratford, Ont, 28 Jul 1877, d Magnetawan, northeast of Parry Sound, Ont, 7 Sep 1932. He was the brother of Henri Kew Jordan and a pupil of F.H. Torrington at the Toronto College of Music. He was organist in the 1890s at St Clement's Anglican Church and a guest performer at several other Toronto churches and then moved to Brantford, where he served 1897-1902 as organist-choirmaster at Brant Ave Methodist Church. He founded (1902) and directed the Brantford Male Choir. He went to London, Ont, and was organist-choirmaster 1903-24 at the First Methodist Church and a teacher 1903-19 at the London Conservatory. He also conducted various choirs, including the London Oratorio Society ca 1905, and gave organ recitals at his church and throughout southern Ontario. He represented Canada at the Pan-American Exposition (1901) in Buffalo and the Pacific Panama Exposition (1915) in San Francisco and gave solo recitals in Pittsburgh and New York. In 1916 Jordan initiated the London Musical Art Society, which engaged and presented well-known artists and orchestras. He founded in 1919, and until his death directed, the London Institute of Musical Art. Commuting to Toronto, he was organist-choirmaster 1925-32 at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church and in 1931 founded the Toronto Chamber Music Society.
