Bombardier Inc is a Canadian manufacturer with headquarters in Montréal. Bombardier Limited was founded in 1942 by Joseph-Armand BOMBARDIER, inventor of the SNOWMOBILE; in 1975 it purchased majority interest in MLW-Worthington Limited (founded in 1902) and, after financial consolidation in 1976, the present name was adopted in 1978. Developing, manufacturing and selling transportation and recreation products worldwide, including Ski-Doo snowmobiles, Bombardier is also involved in heat-transfer products, aerospace components and engines.

The company operates plants in Québec, Austria, Iceland, Belgium, France, the UK, Finland, Mexico, Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland and the US. In January 1999 it had annual sales of $11.6 billion, assets of $14.2 billion and over 53 000 employees. Its major shareholder, Les entreprises de J. Armand Bombardier Limitée, owns 63% of the company. More than 80% of revenues come from markets outside Canada.

Bombardier was successful in August 1986 in taking over CANADAIR LTD, the troubled aircraft company, for $120 million. In April 1990 Bombardier acquired the bankrupt Lear Jet Corp, and then took over half of DE HAVILLAND in March 1992 acquiring the remainder in 1997. These assets were amalgamated in a new aerospace division and Bombardier is now the third-largest manufacturer of civil aircraft (after Boeing and Airbus) in the world and the leading manufacturer of regional aircraft. Aircraft in production include the Canadair Regional Jet and the Dash 8, Global Express, Canadair SE, Challenger 604, Continental, a number of Learjets, and the amphibious fire-fighting aircraft the Canadair 415. The company has moved heavily into the rail car and bus manufacturing business and was responsible for manufacturing the shuttle trains for the Euro Channel Tunnel.
