William John Wintemberg, archaeologist (b at New Dundee, Ont 18 May 1876; d at Ottawa 25 Apr 1941). Wintemberg worked as a compositor and later a coppersmith before his varied and dedicated antiquarian activities led to an association with the Ontario Provincial Museum. In 1911 he was hired as a part-time field-worker by the Victoria Memorial Museum (later National Museum of Canada) and subsequently as a preparator, assistant archaeologist and finally associate archaeologist (1937) at that institution. Wintemberg's archaeological surveys and excavations ranged from Ontario to Newfoundland despite his delicate health. His prolific and model publications established the foundation for much of the prehistory of eastern Canada, in particular, concerning the prehistoric Iroquoian farmers of Ontario.
