Clara Cynthia Benson, professor of chemistry (b at Port Hope, Ont 1875; d there 24 Mar 1964). Associated with University of Toronto for 50 years, she was the first woman to graduate in chemistry (1899), optimistic that there would be many openings for women selecting this area. She became one of the first 2 women awarded a PhD at Toronto (1903). Appointed science instructor in the Lillian Massey School of Household Science, she assisted her colleagues in their struggle for academic recognition of this area.
A capable teacher, stimulator of research and friend of her students, Benson served as professor and head of the Department of Food Chemistry, Faculty of Household Science 1926-45. She was honoured by a scholarship in her name. The Benson Building at U of T was named in recognition of her efforts to obtain better athletic facilities for women students.
