Monica Hughes, née Ince, author (b at Liverpool, Eng 3 November 1925, d at Edmonton 7 March 2003). Monica Hughes spent her childhood in Cairo, London, and Edinburgh. Her Math studies at the University of Edinburgh were interrupted by World War II, when she joined the Women's Royal Naval Service.
John Wilson McConnell, publisher, businessman (b in Muskoka, Ont 1 July 1877; d at Montréal 6 Nov 1963). McConnell was the owner of the Montreal Star, the largest English-language newspaper in Québec, and as such was a force in the land. He went into business in Toronto as a young man.
Frederick John Niven, journalist, novelist (b at Valparaiso, Chile 31 Mar 1878; d at Vancouver 30 Jan 1944). Niven is best known for his novels of Scotland and Scots in Canada. Raised and educated in Scotland, Niven wrote about Canada for British papers after an 1899-1900 trip to BC.
